Hops (Humulus lupulus)

The strongly scented, conelike flowers of the hop plant can be used externally or internally for inducing sleep. It is common knowledge that hops are used in beermaking, but initially they were not favored as an additive to beer and ale because they turned the formerly sweet-tasting ale bitter.

Historically, Chinese physicians used hops to treat leprosy, tuberculosis, and dysentery. The plant was cultivated in Roman gardens; the young shoots were eaten as a vegetable. But hop farmers observed a most noteworthy effect: Those who harvested the perennial climbing plants suffered symptoms of fatigue. Native Americans used them for their sedative and digestion-aiding properties. An old Pennsylvania Dutch remedy for headache or tooth-ache pain called for having the victim lie on a clean sock filled with warmed hops.
